Six bottles, three blokes, one rainy Sunday
"Roped in my brother and our mate Jonno for a lamb roast and the Reds Pack.
Three each sounded reasonable at midday. Less reasonable by 9pm.
Kicked off with the Bay of Fires Pinot in the kitchen —light, brambly, gone before the lamb came out.
The Grant Burge Holy Trinity followed with the first plates.Easy GSM, plummy and spiced, the kind of bottle that disappears while no one’s watching.
Then theFilsell. This one shut us up. Dense, dark, proper Barossa swagger — black cherry and leather, finish that hangs around.Wine of the night, no debate.
The St Hallett Eden Valley Shiraz was the surprise — cooler and more lifted, almost peppery.
If the Filsell played footy, this one went to art school. Both brilliant.
By the Leasingham Classic Clare Cab we’d moved to cheese and questionable music. Big and structured — would’ve shone earlier with the lamb. Lesson learned.
Saved the Katnook Coonawarra Cab for Tuesday night with a steak. That classic Coonawarra mint and cassis, quietly classy.Felt like a reward.
No duds, one standout.The Filsell alone justifies the pack. Cellar One — you’ve cost me a Sunday and earned a customer."
