Understanding wine ratings & awards

Wine scores and medals aren't all equal- so here's a quick guide to what actually matters.

Most critics score out of 100:

Above 90- excellent
Above 94 - outstanding
Above 96 - rare, reserved for wines considered close to perfect

The Halliday Wine Companion is Australia's most trusted wine publication, built over 30 years by James Halliday AM and now led by chief editor Campbell Mattinson and a team who taste over 7,500 wines a year. A high Halliday score means something.

The most credible wine shows judge every entry blind, no labels, no producers, just what's in the glass. Australia's Royal Shows require 95 points or above for a Gold Medal. A Trophy is harder still, awarded to just one wine judged the best in its category across all entries, and withheld entirely if no wine is good enough. Internationally, the Decanter World Wine Awardsand International Wine Challenge draw over 18,000 entries from 57 countries, judged by Masters of Wine and Master Sommeliers.

The Langton's Classification is Australia's most respected guide to fine and collectable wine. Unlike critic scores, it's based on a wine's long-term track record at auction, consistency, demand and price over a minimum of ten vintages. A Langton's listing is one of the strongest signals of quality and collectability in Australian wine.
