Chardonnay - Everything You Need to Know

Chardonnay
Chardonnay is the world's most widely planted white grape and one of the most misunderstood. For years it was dismissed by those who'd only encountered overly oaked, heavy versions that dominated the 1990s. But modern Chardonnay is a completely different story. From crisp and unoaked to rich and complex, cool climate to warm, there's a style for every palate and every occasion. Here's a guide to what's in our range.

The Styles Worth Knowing

Unoaked and fresh - the entry point for anyone who thinks they don't like Chardonnay. No oak influence means the pure fruit character shines through, crisp apple, citrus and white peach with a clean, refreshing finish. The Goundrey Homestead Unwooded Chardonnay is a great example, easy drinking, food-friendly and very approachable.

Light and elegant - a step up in complexity with subtle oak influence that adds texture without overpowering the fruit. The Grant Burge Pearl Chardonnay and Petaluma White Label Chardonnay both sit in this style. fresh, balanced and effortlessly drinkable.

Cool climate and precise - where Chardonnay gets really interesting. Higher altitude regions like Adelaide Hills, Eden Valley and Tasmania produce wines with extraordinary focus, natural acidity and a minerality that sets them apart. The Petaluma Piccadilly Valley Chardonnay, Bay of Fires Chardonnay, Eddystone Point Chardonnay, St Hugo Signature Eden Valley Chardonnay and Orlando Hilary are all brilliant expressions of this style, each reflecting the unique character of their region.

Rich and complex - fuller bodied with more generous oak influence, stone fruit, cashew and a creamy texture. The Brookland Valley Reserve Chardonnay and Estate Chardonnay from Margaret River sit in this category, structured, elegant and built to age. Jacob's Creek Limited Release Chardonnay and Grant Burge Sunset Ink offer a similarly generous style at a more accessible price point.

The icon - at the top of the range, Eileen Hardy Chardonnay is one of Australia's most celebrated and consistently awarded Chardonnays. Eileen Hardy Chardonnay draws on premium fruit from Australia's finest cool climate regions, fruit that doesn't make Eileen goes into HRB, making HRB Chardonnay one of the best value chardonnays in the country.
