Sauvignon Blanc, The Wild One

Sauvignon Blanc gets its name from the French word sauvage, meaning “wild” a fitting name for one of the world's most distinctive aromatic grapes.

Here's something many people don't know: Sauvignon Blanc is one of the two parent grapes of Cabernet Sauvignon, alongside Cabernet Franc. DNA testing revealed that the two crossed naturally to create Cabernet Sauvignon in Bordeaux several centuries ago.

And while Cabernet Sauvignon is very different from its white parent, you can sometimes find a familiar distinctive herbaceous and brambly character in the red grape too.

The Styles Worth Knowing

Crisp and easy-drinking – an approachable style for anyone who wants Sauvignon Blanc at its simplest and most refreshing. Grapefruit, gooseberry and tropical fruit, with a soft palate, balanced acidity and crisp finish. Tatachilla White Admiral Sauvignon Blanc is a great example, easy drinking and made for good friends on a warm day.

Cool climate and precise - Adelaide Hills' altitude and cool nights help produce Sauvignon Blanc with freshness, aromatic intensity and crisp acidity. Petaluma White Label Sauvignon Blanc is one of our most loved wines in the range, passionfruit, feijoa and cut grass, fresh and zesty with lovely balanced acidity.

Cool, wild and textural - Tasmania's cool climate produces Sauvignon Blanc with freshness, intensity and texture. Bay of Fires Sauvignon Blanc and Eddystone Point Sauvignon Blanc both showcase this style with tropical fruit, blackcurrant, flint and fresh herbs, building complexity and texture.

Textural and complex - one of Margaret River's signature styles is the blend of Sauvignon Blanc with Semillon. The two varieties have been partners in Bordeaux for generations, and Margaret River has made the combination its own. Semillon can add texture and richness, while Sauvignon Blanc brings aromatic lift and vibrant acidity, creating a beautifully balanced blend. Brookland Valley Margaret River Sauvignon Blanc Semillon shows this combination beautifully, vibrant citrus and gooseberry balanced by bright, fresh acidity.

Bold and unmistakable - the style that helped put New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc on the world map. Marlborough produces highly aromatic wines with passionfruit, gooseberry, citrus and tropical fruit, backed by vibrant acidity. Mud House Sub Region Rapaura Sauvignon Blanc is zesty and generous, while the Mud House Single Vineyard Woolshed Sauvignon Blanc takes a more elegant, juicy approach, lemon and lime citrus with a subtle savoury quality and a dry, refreshing finish.

Petaluma White Label and Bay of Fires are two of our most loved Sauvignon Blancs, and a great place to begin if you want to discover just how differently this grape can express itself depending on where it's grown and how it's made.
