Western Australia - The Regions

Western Australia
Western Australia is one of the world's most geographically diverse wine states. Stretching from the Swan Valley just outside Perth down to the remote southern coast, Western Australia is home to nine vast and extraordinary wine regions, each crafting wines with worldwide appeal across ancient and pristine land. The wines consistently punch above their weight on the world stage - elegant, structured and built to age. Three regions in particular are worth knowing well. Explore our Western Australia wines →

Margaret River
Margaret River sits on a narrow peninsula about 280 kilometres south of Perth, where the Indian Ocean meets the Southern Ocean. Less than two kilometres from the Indian Ocean, it is this proximity to water that has a profound effect on the climatic conditions in the vineyard, the cooling sea breeze keeps temperatures mild during summer, allowing grapes to ripen slowly and enhancing flavour development. The result is wines of remarkable elegance and refinement. Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay are the region's twin strengths, both producing wines considered among the finest in Australia. Sauvignon Blanc Semillon blends and Chenin Blanc also thrive here, offering some of the most food-friendly whites in the country. Explore our Margaret River wines →

Frankland River
Frankland River is the most prolific of the Great Southern sub-regions and home to some of the oldest vines in Western Australia, with the first modern day vineyards planted in 1967. Wines produced here display flavour derived from ironstone-based gravel soils that line the river valleys and rolling hills. The climate is cool and continental, with cool nights and warm days creating a long, slow ripening season. The wines are known for their firm structure, distinctive minerality and serious aging potential. Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon are the standout varietals - powerful, precise and unlike anything produced on the east coast. Explore our Frankland River wines →

Pemberton
Pemberton's star continues to rise as winemakers draw on site variation to craft exceptional wines against a cool coastal backdrop. Surrounded by towering karri forests and national parks, the region has a temperate climate with high rainfall and red loam soils that produce wines with real concentration and complexity. Chardonnay is the key white variety, while Sauvignon Blanc and Riesling also show great promise. An emerging region still finding its feet; but already producing wines that reward attention.
