"The Planted series is a tribute to the centenarian vines from Barossa and to the growers who have nurtured them. It is because of their experience as world class viticulturalists that these vines produce exceptional quality. The 2017 vintage release celebrates the Marschall Old Block, an 84-year-old vineyard in the parish of Kalimna, from local grower Jeanette Marschall. This is the second release of the Planted Series", Helen McCarthy, Chief Winemaker

COLOUR - Deep crimson with soft brick hues

NOSE - The nose expresses rich dark fruits upfront with layers of toasted caraway seed, white pepper, dried bay leaf and subtle hint of allspice.

PALATE -The palate shows power and concentration with layers of dark fruit, ripe juniper, milk chocolate and spices. The oak is beautifully integrated with the fruit and complemented by fine grained tannins. The wine has a seamless harmony between flavour and texture with extraordinary length.

PEAK DRINKING - Cellaring potential for 20+ years

FOOD MATCH - Pairs perfectly with red meat such as beef, lamb and venison

98 Points- Ray Jordan - Wine Pilot 2025 - "An outstanding new release that is part of the Planted Series. It was sourced from an 84-year-old block in the famous parish of Kalimna, benefiting from a late cooler vintage which has suited this elegant and seductive style. Power in abundance, but the bright energy of the nose and palate brings a degree of elegance and refinement. It’s a wine that flows effortlessly to a long finish with its engaging mix of blackberry and plummy fruit merging with a chocolate, spicy dried herb combination. A supreme example of old vine Barossa shiraz."

97 Points - Halliday Wine Companion 2026 - Dave Brookes - "A stellar offering from St Hallett, featuring shiraz sourced from the 1936 plantings of the Marschall Old Block. There is a sense of compression on display, but it's sleek and graceful and fresh as a daisy, showing elegant structure and fine, lacy minerality. Finely poised doris plum and blackberry fruits are undercut by an array of fine spice, along with hints of brown spice, blueberry pie, panforte, bay leaf, black pepper, dark chocolate dipped cherries, cocoa nibs, raspberry coulis, cedar, tobacco and earth. Its subregional voice is crystal clear; the tannins are silty and powder-fine and that finish sails on for some time. What a terrific wine."

97 Points - Wine Pilot - Shanteh Wale 2025 - "The 1936 comes from Centenarian vines from Kalimna tended with care and love from growers and viticulturists over the many decades. There is a reverence in the room when wines such as these are tasted, simply out of respect for the site and the people that are loyal to them. And then there is the selection process of crafting the wine and patience it takes to rest the wines before release. You know you are tasting the work of not only a village but of a whole society of people dedicated to the art of wine. A ominous bottle in a royal looking box the wine surprises and delights with subtly and chiseled detail. A mosaic of red fruits, persimmon, goji berry and dried raspberries. Which leads to the undercurrents of earthly persuasion rooibos tea, pulled red bark and gumnut. There is pepper berry, frankincense and bay leaf. A slurry of silty tannins and all held upright with elongated lines of acidity. After dinner edibles of espresso, cigar cuttings and quality chocolate linger on the palate. This is a wine for savouring and the slowing down of time. Perhaps with slices of roast beef, then aged cheddar and chocolate mousse for afters. It will go the entire distance of a long multi course meal. Drink now and will cellar well for another 8 years or so."

96 Points - Stuart Knox The Real Review 2025 - "A deep and plush ruby colour in the glass. Mixed forest berries, rosemary, and curing beef aromatics. It is powerful but not overbearing, a deft touch allows it to sit with a freshness that belies its intensity. Red and blue fruits are bound in dried rosemary, bay leaf and deeper nori notes. Tannins sit underneath, ensuring it stays on song without gripping too firmly. It is a seamless package, on the medium side of full for the region but all the better for it. Give it time to breathe and enjoy its style and grace as it unfurls"

95 Points - Mike Bennie - Australia's Wine Business Magazine 2025 - "Impressive for its concentration and depth as it is for its prime-time drinking with eight or so years since harvest. There’s dark berry fruitiness at the core of the wine, though dried fruits, hazelnut, truffle, woody spice and a softening of thick tannin speak of its years since conception. It spreads wide and supple through the palate, a huge volume of perfume in tow. A wine of impressive stature."

95 Points - Tom Kline Wine Pilot 2025 - "Here we have a new release from the Planted Series - a tribute to the centenarian vines from Barossa and to the growers who have tended to them. Old leather, black liquorice, ground coffee, grilled meat, flickers of camphor and black pepper sit above blackberry fruit. Air reveals black olive in brine, goji berry, menthol and dried bay leaf adding a herbal edge. This is savoury in its aesthetic, and as the aromas unfold the wine comes into a new level of completeness and complexity. The palate is dark fruited, brooding and full bodied, but it manages to avoid a feeling of heft. Blackberry, black cherry, plum, cedar, dark chocolate, black liquorice, espresso. There’s an anchoring of fine-but-firm mocha-laced tannins helping to draw to long, poised length. 14.7% abv sits in nice balance with the heat present but controlled.  This will sleep nicely in the cellar for another five to ten years."
