First produced in 1980, St Hallett Old Block is made from the best available Old Vine Shiraz from both the Barossa and Eden Valleys. 2016 Old Block is an elegant, seamless full-bodied wine complete with a silky palate and immaculate oak. Layers of dark cherry, blackberries, anise and white pepper slowly unfolds across the palate. The acid and tannin are in perfect balance which is reflected in the cellaring potential below.
The 2016 vintage consists of 51% Barossa Valley, 49% Eden Valley fruit.
Peak drinking 2040 – 2050
97 Gold Halliday Points - James Halliday 2021 -"92yo vines, hand-picked, tank and open fermenters, 10 days on skins, matured in French hogsheads and puncheons (25% new) for 18 months. As magnificently rich and deeply flavoured as expected. Blackberry and blackcurrant, then a move to licorice, onto cedary oak and supple tannin providing texture and structure."
97 Points - Regan Drew in the Gold Coast Bulletin 2021 - "51 per cent Barossa Valley, 49 per cent Eden Valley. Average vine age for this release is 92 years old. Concentrated, focused yet almost luxurious palate with cool black olive edge to quality dark chocolate dipped cherries with white pepper spice. Impeccable balance, depth and length."
95 Points - Huon Hooke - The Real Review 2020 - "Very deep, youthfully bright purple/red colour, the bouquet savoury, oak-tinged and coconutty, shouting American oak. The wine is full-bodied and firm, loaded with flavour and backed by a firm spine of tannins, some of which are oaky. Good depth, concentration and fleshiness: it just needs time."
