“One of the only wines of this variety you will find in New Zealand, Marzemino is rare outside of its home country of Italy, where it is grown in the Trentino-Alto Adige region. There is mention of this wine in Mozart's opera "Don Giovanni", where it’s referred to as "Eccellente Marzemino". In Hawke’s Bay the variety produces deeply coloured, plummy red wines with supple tannins and fragrant floral notes accompanied by a rustic, savoury element lending the wine a distinctly food friendly feel” - Chris Scott, Chief Winemaker
Deep in colour, this wine has lifted sweet plum and berry fruit, scented floral aromas and subtle cardamom notes. Rustic earthy complexity adds depth and appeal.
The palate is medium bodied with a gentle textured, approachable and slightly savoury tannin structure. While drinking beautifully now now, this wine will age positively for at least 10 years in good cellaring conditions.
Well matched to a variety of meat and game dishes, especially braised meat dishes such as Osso Bucco, beef cheeks or lamb shanks and even many northern Indian style curries. It also works well with cured meats, and richer pasta dishes.
